On
Monday 5th of February 2006, The Male Cancer Awareness Campaign
visited the London headquarters of the largest independent
mobile communications retailer in Europe, the Carphone Warehouse.
Su Carlson, Information Officer for UK South
and West, came to London and supported Founder and Information
Officer Patrick Cox in a mammoth day awareness session.
They started at 9:15am and finished at 6:30pm, holding over
two hundred one-to-one sessions, and small group live awareness
sessions, for both male and female employees. They could
not see everyone because the London office of the Carphone
Warehouse has over 2000 employees, but hope to return soon
to complete another day’s education.
The response was extremely positive. People
asked lots of questions and seemed very pleased that their
employer was providing them with this such an important
information service. Patrick and Su met staff whose family
or friends had just been diagnosed with cancer, and were
pleased to be able to offer some support by answering their
questions and discussing their worries.
After the live awareness sessions had finished,
Patrick Cox said ‘The response today proves why The
Male Cancer Awareness Campaign is so important. Live awareness
works. It is simple and effective. When raising awareness
in this way – one-to-one, or in small groups, we are
able to allay fears and to dispel myths people hear about
cancer, reinforcing our message that early detection saves
lives.’
The Campaign would like to thank Agnes and
Rebecca for their time and support, and all the staff at
the Carphone Warehouse for making Patrick and Su feel so
welcome, and for the kind donation of £400 from the
Carphone Warehouse.
